Avant Car Guard: Volume I (2006)

R600.00

A rare piece of South African contemporary art history, this is Volume I, the debut, self-published book from the influential and satirical collective, Avant Car Guard.

Comprising artists Zander Blom, Jan-Henri Booyens, and Michael MacGarry, the collective famously critiqued the commercialism and conventions of the art world. This 2006 publication, released to accompany their debut solo exhibition is a perfect embodiment of their philosophy.

Designed as an “anti-catalogue,” Volume I rejects the high-gloss coffee-table format. Instead, it embraces a lo-fi, DIY zine aesthetic. In great condition, this item consists of a rough-cardboard outer sleeve. Inside is a stapled booklet featuring the collective’s early provocative works.
