Description
A rare Premiere Issue (Issue #1) of Joe magazine, the masculine counterpart to the Coco Joe project launched by Channel O in September 2009, and sold exclusively at the once popular Musica stores.
Designed by the now-defunct and highly influential studio The President (Peet Pienaar & Hannerie Visser), this publication was released as a limited edition “Lucky Packet,” blurring the lines between a magazine and an art object.
This is a 1st edition launch issue from 2009, guest edited by renowned creative Nonkululeko Mlangeni. It is a prestine example of iconic Sout African design, and features Peet Pienaar’s signature “African Bling” satire, utilising a gold coin vector pattern to comment on wealth and status in African pop culture.
A scarce piece of South African design history, in excellent condition, from the studio that paved the way for Mami Wata and the modern Afro-pop aesthetic.
