An incredibly scarce, time-capsule copy of the inaugural debut issue of friends magazine, published in January 2015. Subtitled simply as “An Occasional,” this fiercely independent, short-lived print publication was distributed for free across a selective network of alternative art galleries, clothing boutiques, and youth subculture spaces.
Bypassing corporate publishing layouts, friends served as a raw, gritty platform for unfiltered photography, essays, and artistic curation. This premier issue focuses tightly on the theme of “The Male Daze”, offering a highly provocative, visually striking, and deconstructed examination of modern masculinity and identity within the South African urban landscape.
Featuring a beautifully chaotic cover design utilizing a distinct fluorescent orange, black, and white duotone palette, it remains a brilliant monument to mid-2010s South African independent street-press culture.
