Description
An extraordinarily rare, time-capsule pair of ultra-limited-edition independent art publications produced by the Love and Hate Studio collective (founded in 2004 by Cape Town-based artists Black Koki and 35.ten.73 / Ello). This bundle represents the raw genesis of the mid-2000s South African lowbrow, post-graffiti, and street-art explosion.
These highly experimental, DIY publications completely bypassed mainstream galleries to chronicle the underground subculture filtering through Cape Town and Pretoria at the turn of the millennium.
The Publications Included:
1. A5: social.logical.art-intrigue (Issue 1, c. 2005)
-
Limited Edition: Hand-numbered 1 of only 350 copies printed.
-
The Roster: Features an incredible, star-studded lineup of creators who would go on to reshape contemporary South African art and music, including early-career print work from Zander Blom, Asha Zero, Senyol, Louis Minnaar, and Black Koki.
-
The Cult Factor: Includes early underground print contributions from Watkin Tudor Jones (a few years prior to achieving global fame as “Ninja” of Die Antwoord).
-
Bonus: Comes complete with its original, unpeeled gold-foil branding sticker and the enclosed free sticker sheet by Love and Hate.
2. New Suburbia (2006)
-
Limited Edition: An absolute ghost of a publication, hand-numbered 7 of only 50 copies inside the crown graphic.
-
The History: Published in conjunction with the radical New Suburbia underground group exhibition curated with Love and Hate in 2006 at the legendary alternative art space, Platform on Eighteenth in Pretoria. It features the era’s signature raw, comic-influenced, subversive illustration style.
-
Condition: Pristine / As-New (Deadstock). Both publications are impeccably preserved, remaining completely flat and still sealed in their original protective plastic housings. Extremely scarce in this untouched, archival condition.
A museum-grade addition for serious collectors of South African street art history, rare zines, and alternative 21st-century print media.
