Description
A rare collection tracing the evolution of Roger Ballen’s distinctive photographic language, from his early documentary work in rural South Africa to the fully realised theatrical, psychological worlds of his later practice.
This collection brings together four important publications spanning Roger Ballen’s career: Dorps: Small Towns of South Africa (1986), Outland (2001), Shadow Chamber, and Boarding House (2009).
The earliest work, Dorps, is Ballen’s seminal first book—a haunting documentary study of isolated towns and their inhabitants in rural South Africa. Published before the emergence of his more surrealist approach, it provides an important foundation for understanding the evolution of his photographic practice.
With Outland, Ballen’s vision takes a decisive turn. First published by Phaidon in 2001, the book introduced the international art world to the unsettling, staged reality that would become known as the “Ballenesque”. Shadow Chamber continues this transformation, blurring the boundaries between documentary photography, drawing, painting and constructed imagery to create psychologically charged, claustrophobic worlds.
The collection culminates in Boarding House (2009), in which Ballen’s theatrical universe becomes increasingly elaborate. Set within a makeshift dwelling in Johannesburg, the images combine human presence with drawings, scavenged objects and constructed environments, creating an ambiguous space where reality and fiction become almost impossible to separate.
Together, these four publications offer a compelling overview of one of South Africa’s most distinctive photographic practices, charting Ballen’s progression from social documentary to a highly personal and influential form of staged surrealism.
Collector’s note: The Outland and Shadow Chamber copies are hand-signed by Roger Ballen.
