Description
A significant three-volume collection tracing William Kentridge’s remarkable intersection of drawing, printmaking, film and theatre.
This collection brings together three important first editions spanning Kentridge’s practice: Flute (2007), William Kentridge: Five Themes (2009), and Nose (2010).
Flute documents Kentridge’s celebrated production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, offering an intimate look at the development of the project from its earliest conceptual drawings through to the finished stage production. Published by David Krut, the richly illustrated volume also considers the relationship between The Magic Flute and the darker imagery and themes explored in Black Box / Chambre Noire.
The comprehensive William Kentridge: Five Themes accompanies the major 2009 survey of the artist’s work. Spanning his films, drawings, theatre and sculptural models, it provides one of the most substantial overviews of Kentridge’s practice and remains an essential reference for understanding the breadth of his work. This copy is in mint condition and retains the original DVD.
Completing the collection is Nose, published by David Krut in 2010. The scarce volume documents Kentridge’s suite of thirty etchings created in response to his acclaimed production of Shostakovich’s opera The Nose at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. It offers a particularly focused view of Kentridge’s relationship with printmaking, opera and the translation of his visual language into the theatrical realm.
Together, these three publications provide a concise but unusually rich portrait of Kentridge’s multidisciplinary practice, demonstrating how his distinctive visual language moves fluidly between drawing, print, moving image and performance.
